TOUR 6 – UBUD ART VILLAGES

A trip to UbuD Province, the culture heartland of Bali is an excellent way to get an understanding of the local art and culture. We will see the traditional barong dance at Batubulan, then on to Celuk famous for it’s gold and silver smiths; then Mas village, world renowned for its fine wood carving. A visit to a local family compound in Singapadu will give us a new perspective on the way of life of this friendly people. Afterward we will see the best of Balinese painting: classical, native, traditional and modern style in Ubud. Our last stop Wanara Wana monkey forest where live dozens of long tailed macaque considered sacred by the locals.

BATUBULAN
Batubulan is in the west part of Gianyar regency of Bali. Batubulan has been famous both in Indonesia and worldwide for the artistic blessing Barong dance (Bali Barong Dance and Bali Keris dance) and Bali stone carving.

CELUK VILLAGE FOR GOLD AND SILVER
Next stop is visiting the beautiful gold and silver at Celuk Village. Its famous for the incredible gold and silver handicrafts which are available around this area for very low prices. In the past, the dwellers of Celuk Village were mostly farmers. Rumors have it that there were only three families who belonged to the caste of Pande that pioneered this industry. MAS WOOD CARVING VILLAGE
Mas is famous in Bali as being one of the main arts and crafts villages on the island. Where Ubud is the village of the painters, Mas is the village of the carvers where some of the most incredible woodcarvings are produced and have been produced for hundreds of years. Carvings range from very small pieces that can be perfect gives up to larger ornaments and furniture and on to incredible elaborate pieces that can be as large as 25 square meters and even more such as murals add great door arches that are traditionally reserved for temples and stately homes of the Balinese Royalty and wealthy. Then the Royal Balinese families moved into Ubud and those who seeked work with them tried to offer to sell them goods. The royals then only started to buy and do business with the very best carvers from Mas and the best painters of Ubud and soon all of the island’s best craftsmen moved to their prospective villages creating subcultures orientated around their talents. The carvings themselves differ between representations of the Balinese people often as farmers and in situations that the average Balinese worker can relate to, to amazing decorative carvings for the rich and then also some legends, myths representations of aspects of the Balinese religions and the stories that they entail.

UBUD VILLAGE FOR PAINTING
A famous Balinese Artwork / Balinese paintings and as such a famous Bali tourism destinations, it is popular with center of Bali painting arts. Third stop on Ubud Tour is visit Batuan Village for beautiful Fine Art. They illustrated many stories about religion and bali life. Usually it is a pieces of paintings that tell a stories. The material used also traditional material from mineral and vegetables or plant resources. Batuan village wasn’t influenced by the western as they were in Ubud. The Batuan paintings were often dark, crowded representations of either legendary scenes or themes from daily life, freakish animal monsters, and witches accosted people.

WHERE TO SHOP AND WHAT TO BUY IN UBUD
Shopping in and around the perimeters of the Ubud village promises an exciting adventure that will add to a memorable holiday experience. The whole area is dotted with different shops and galleries suitable for a free-roaming spree. Quieter, interconnecting footpaths and roads compared to the island’s southern region, makes for an enjoyable shopping tour.

WANARA WANA
Wanara Wana is the name of monkey forest in Sanskrit language, as the language ever influenced the layers of religious and ruling class of Indonesian archipelago before the fall into islam, and only Bali that strongly maintains the tradition. It is important to treat the monkeys with respect as this forest is heir home and you are a guest in it. Please remain on the paved paths. The monkeys may become aggressive if you invade their private areas. It can often seen how the Balinese Macaques are cracking open coconuts. If available they like to eat bananas and papayas, too. Once taken please leave the fruit with the monkeys. If you wish to feed the macaques please do so carefully, and if they take food from you, please do not attempt to retrieve it back. It is also of great importance that you treat the trees, the plants and other animals and structures within the Sacred Monkey Forest with great respect. This is holy area and an important ecological preservation. please enjoy the beauty and magic of this place. while at the same time respecting what lives in it.
